What are the benefits of journaling and other written forms of self-expression?
What's the difference between a planner, habit tracker, and journal?
A planner is a scheduling tool that helps you manage your time more efficiently. It may include to-do list alternatives, calendars, brainstorming worksheets/exercises, etc.
A habit tracker, on the other hand, helps you monitor the consistency of specific behaviors or actions. This type of tool is well-suited to keeping you focused on a goal or the changes you wish to create in your life.
A journal is a place to record your personal experiences. They may include deep thoughts, emotions, and beliefs or just a narrative of your day-to-day life. Think of a journal as a tool to take snapshots in written form of things you want to remember or process.
Again, each tool helps you examine and improve a different aspect of your life. Depending on whether you utilize a planner versus a habit tracker or journal, you gain a better understanding of and directly influence:
- Time management skills
- Thoughts and emotions
What is a bullet journal, or BuJo?
Bullet journals, also called BuJos, refer to a customizable journaling style that features stickers, drawings, and other visual designs organized in distinct spatial sections. They incorporate checklists, bullet points, and other list-making prompts for habit tracking and personal planning.
While BuJos in a traditional sense require a lot of time and creativity to set up from scratch, our pre-designed pages come ready for you to use immediately. You still benefit from the best part of the BuJo method: a quick, fill-in-the-blank journaling practice.
How do I pick the best journal for me?
You are asking the right question! Ideally, you want a journal that fits within your self-awareness comfort zone. Also consider how much time you wish to devote to a journaling practice – shorter sessions at more frequent intervals versus longer writing stints every few days. Lastly, think about which you prefer when given a choice between long-form writing or jotting down a quick list.
If you want to make the decision even easier, take our Journaling Personality Type Quiz to take you straight to the perfect journal for you.
How often should I write in my journal, planner, or habit tracker?
If you’re looking to start a new habit, track it daily whenever possible! Consistency is key to eliminating or forming habits. That being said, if you just want to take stock of your current habit frequency or patterns, tracking for a few days will paint a good picture of your baseline. Tracking every several months after establishing a habit is a good maintenance practice as well.
When it comes to journaling or planning in general, devoting 10-15 minutes a couple of days a week decreases stress while improving mood and focus. Again, consistency plays a key role in any self-care habit, so setting a schedule to make time for this habit will help it stick.
